The Green Party is Blowing Up!

Don't worry, we're blowing up in a good way. If you haven't noticed, we've been in the local news a bit lately. I'll give you a quick recap then let you know how you can get involved.

Last Saturday was the Green Party of New York's State Committee meeting in Albany. It was long, but it went well. New officers were elected including Gubernatorial candidate Howie Hawkins who was elected co-chair of the State Party.

On Monday, the recent election was officially certified by the State Board of Elections. Howie Hawkins received 59,928 votes and the Green Party officially earned ballot status in New York State! Congratulations to all of us!

Then, on Monday night, in a crazy snow storm, the Green Party of Monroe County elected it's County Committee. Congratulations goes out to Vinessa Buckland and Scott Brant who were elected co-chairs, Mike Hendrick, Treasurer and old, grizzled veteran, Dave Atias (that's me) Secretary. As county officers, we're working to get our infrastructure back. By the time you read this we should have our new phone number up and working for you to leave messages at. We'll be getting our bank account in order for people to donate money so we can run campaigns and work on issues. And we'll be planning for upcoming political races because we desperately need something other than this one-party rule in both the city and the county.

Here's where you come in. Our Steering Committee is comprised of the county officers, current candidates for office and any registered Green who wants to be involved in the running of the party. Yes, that means YOU. Our first Steering Committee since getting ballot status back will be on Monday, December 20th at 7pm at 891 Monroe Avenue on the 2nd floor. (Boldo's Armory) While the Greens never really went away, we still have some rebuilding to do, especially in light of the upcoming special election in the City. We hope to see you there.

The Steering Committee is open to registered Greens only. So if you're not registered Green, do it now! Show the parties in power that your tired of their games and you want people in office with vision and courage. It may take a month or so before you see voter registration cards with a specific Green option, but you've always been able to register Green by checking "Other" and writing in "Green". Everything you need to change your party is at http://www.monroecounty.gov/elections-registration.php

With City Council giving the finger to City residents with its behind-closed-doors, not official but binding vote (?), we've been in the news quite a bit in the last few days. We try to find all the online links and post them to our Twitter page. You don't have to have a Twitter account to access it so check it out at http://twitter.com/GreenPartyofMC . Here's a taste of what we've been up to. http://bit.ly/evW46m

Are you on the Facebook? We are, too. "Like" us at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Green-Party-of-Monroe-County/129634820388655. And suggest us to your friends!

Don't call it a comeback. We've been here for years! But it's time to change the game. We will have a candidate in the Special Election for Mayor and it will be up to all of us to get her or him elected. We'll be explaining how soon. In the meantime, make sure you're registered Green, talk to others about registering Green, spread links about us and let's start building relationships with those who don't know what the Green Party is all about!

Keep warm!

Dave
