Green Party Candidates--Some Reflections

GOVERNOR

Malachy McCourt: Mr. McCourt is a well known figure and his statements address the voter who has not been voting his/her conscience--and instead voting for the lesser of 2 evils. He is anxious to bear the banner of the Green Party in NY--and the key values that we endorse. This is an important point and a good one to emphasize during the election. He obviously has the resources and the name to bring press and attention to the campaign.

LT. GOVERNOR
Alison Duncan -- a longtime activist for women, gay, lesbian, and rights of all people in NY and in this country. She brings experience and honesty to this campaign.

U.S. SENATOR
Howie Hawkins--definitely GREEN...No doubt about his credibility as an activist, a truthful person, a representative of the working class. He is what the party is about at its platform level. He is not a career politician. We need to declare that we are asking the voting public to vote for a candidate they can believe. This is not a frivolous request since so much rests on Hawkins who can seriously challenge all that Hillary Clinton has abandoned--the common folk, the victims of this immoral war, and the environmental disasters already faced by toxic dumps and global warming--right in this state and throughout the country.

ATTORNEY GENERAL
Rachel Treichler--She is far better than most green Candidates I have ever met--truly a Green in soul and speech. She has atty experience, and needs to emphasize the specifics of court cases (the scope and achievement) more clearly to be credible with the public. Her humility and talent for listening need to be exploited but in a confident way--since voters want leadership and "fight" in their atty general. But, we need to emphasize that she has experience as a lawyer in NYC and is not to be taken lightly.

At this point I don't feel like I know much about Malachy McCourt, or his qualifications. I am disappointed that I haven't seen more visible activity from either Malachly or his campaign staff. He seems like a nice guy, I am hoping to find out more than that this weekend.

Kimberly Wilder certainly has committed an impressive amount of time, energy and passion to her work with the Green Party, am I confident this level of commitment will continue through out the year. I was impressed with her presentation at the convention, she did an excellent job conveying a message of unity and common goals. I hope she decides to focus on a specific focus she would take on as a Lieutenant Governor and add some serious substance and content to her campaign. I felt her framing of the Green Party as a party of love was correctly assessed but poorly framed, possibly compassion, values, soul, or peace may have been better word choices.

Rachel Triechler Is our most local candidate at this point in time and certainly many Greens in Monroe County and across the State know Rachel, for she has likely contributed as much to growth of the Green Party in New York as anyone. I really like the layout of her platform, voter rights and electoral reform are issues very important to growing political party that is faced with overcoming many obstacles put in place by the 2 major parties in efforts to prevent the growth of another political party. Fighting for electoral equality is going to be an important issue Greens as long as corporate controlled political parties have the power to make the laws. Certainly the Green Party has been the leader in voter rights for the past several years, I feel it's an issue we should continue to fight and to stand proud of our efforts and victories in gaining equally voting rights for all citizens of this nation.

Carl E. Person has a very deep platform, 46 points of pure substance and great ideas. The top of Carl's platform is an idea on how citizens can fight back against the major corporations that have invaded our towns, devalued our lives, eliminated diversity, destroyed our environments, while sending our money out of our communities. Carl wants to create a new position of Town Attorney General so that the people can have a lawyer in every Town dedicated to fighting for the rights and legal protection granted to the people under our laws. An Attorney in every town in New York State fighting the hundreds of thousands attorney's that are trying to shelter these corporations so that they can continue to violate our rights and our laws, now it's time for the citizens to fight back. It's also nice to know Carl makes a living fighting Wal-Mart and other big corporations. My concern is that this idea does takes some explaining, which is often difficult to do in a political campaign. People also tend to have a bad initial reaction to creating another government office, a number of audience members Saturday seemed to miss that the funding for these positions should become economically sustainable with monetary settlements. Long term effects with mean mostly locally owned, ethically responsible business would want to operate in New York State, which is excellent, as long as, we can find enough ethical people interested in running there own businesses to meet our basic needs, and can survive the growing pains of a transformation economy. Nice person, good speaker, great energy and a lot of new ideas.

I simply haven’t gotten around to typing up the rest of my reviews. I was hoping to have a report on both Sander Hicks and Howie Hawkins.

Thank you p swartzfager for your kind words and support.

Thank you Jason for sharing your reflections.

I am an admirer of the late Leo Buscaglia, so I am proud to use the word "love" anywhere. It is quite radical in the best of ways.

Also, I did relate the fact that in politics love translates into "tolerance", ie: justice for immigrants, LGBT community, disabled people, etc.

Peace and struggle,
Kimberly Wilder
