WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Green Party leaders, candidates, elected officeholders, and activists will participate in the People's Climate March in New York City on Sunday, September 21, (http://peoplesclimate.org) and the NYC Climate Convergence, "a weekend packed with skill-shares, teach-ins, speak-outs and protests from September 19-21 in conjunction with the People's Climate March" (http://convergeforclimate.org).

The two events coincide with the United Nations Climate Summit in New York on September 23. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the summit in preparation for the Paris Treaty to be negotiated in December 2015 by the Conference of the Parties (COP), which is part of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Green Party's National Committee has endorsed the Climate Convergence (http://www.gp.org/cgi-bin/vote/propdetail?pid=737). Greens noted that the Convergence brings concrete agenda to a march that offers no specific demands or long-term strategy.

"The United States and the U.N. have failed to address the climate crisis as an emergency that threatens the planet. The corporate sector has dominated all discussion of proposals to stem the crisis. Instead of trade pacts like the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, plans for new oil drilling, and more permission for corporate plunder, we need a national plan of action like the Green New Deal," said Dr. Isa Infante, Green candidate for governor of Tennessee (http://www.isainfante.org).

The Green New Deal is an emergency program of specific solutions for climate change that uses conversion to a green economy to generate millions of new jobs (http://www.jillstein.org/green_new_deal). It was the basis of Green nominee Jill Stein's campaign for president in 2012. Dr. Stein is one of the featured speakers in the NYC Climate Convergence.

Green candidates have continued to promote the Green New Deal, which was introduced by Howie Hawkins during his 2010 New York gubernatorial campaign. Mr. Hawkins is running for governor again in this year's election (http://www.howiehawkins.org).

"The fight against climate change isn't just a call for a few new policies. We need an overhaul of our political and economic system," said Matt Funiciello, Green candidate for the U.S. House in New York's 21st District (http://mattfunicielloforcongress.org).

"Action against the climate crisis has been stymied by pressure from the same special business interests that are wrecking our economy, depressing wages, and pressing Congress and the White House to repeal labor rights and protections. They intend to make a killing on scarcity caused by climate change through privatization of water and other public resources. The Democratic and Republican parties continue to accede to their demands. The Green Party represents the political front against the two-party corporate-money political establishment that is allowing the brunt of the environmental and economic crisis to fall on working people and the poor," said Mr. Funiciello.

Participants in the People's Climate March will gather in the area north of Columbus Circle (59th Street and 8th Avenue) and will start off at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 21. Over 950 businesses, unions, faith groups, schools, social-justice and environmental organizations are planning to join the peaceful event.

In an essay published May 21 by Rolling Stone, Bill McKibben warned of the deepening severity of the climate crisis: "Since [President Obama] took office, summer sea ice in the Arctic has mostly disappeared, and at the South Pole, scientists in May made clear that the process of massive melt is now fully under way, with 10 feet of sea-level rise in the offing. Scientists have discovered the depth of changes in ocean chemistry: that seawater is 30 percent more acidic than just four decades ago, and it's already causing trouble for creatures at the bottom of the marine food chain. America has weathered the hottest year in its history, 2012, which saw a drought so deep that the corn harvest largely failed. At the moment, one of the biggest states in Obama's union, California, is caught in a drought deeper than any time since Europeans arrived. Hell, a few blocks south of the U.N. buildings, Hurricane Sandy turned the Lower East Side of New York into a branch of the East River. And that's just the United States."
