Howie Hawkins at the Next Monthly Meeting

On Monday, October 11th, Green Party candidate for Governor will be the speaker at the Green Party of Monroe County's monthly meeting.  The meeting is free and open to the public and will be held at the Flying Squirrel Collective, 285 Clarissa Street in Corn Hill.  Meeting time is 7 - 9pm.

Hawkins will be explaining his Green New Deal, why he wants to ban hydrofracking and more.

We will also be finalizing plans for Rochester to help Hawkins get the 50,000 votes needed to get ballot status back for the Green Party in New York state. This will lead to more local Green candidates.

The meeting is free, but if you're able, please come prepared to make a financial contribution to the campaign. The big parties are busy acting like children, so it's up to us to clean this mess up. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work.

For more information on Howie Hawkins, visit http://www.howiehawkins.com/

Campaign Update And More

Fellow Progressives,

Are you getting tired of the media coverage of the upcoming election?  It's even more pathetic than usual this year.  While rich people who run get free publicity from the media, serious working-class people who run get ignored.  It's time we start taking a little more control.

*Start writing letters-to-the-editor.  They don't have to be long and they shouldn't be negative.  Just mention that there is a candidate for governor who would enact a Green New Deal for New York, wants to ban hydrofracking and create a state-wide single-payer health care system.  That is Green Party Candidate Howie Hawkins.  Include the campaign website which is http://www.howiehawkins.com.

Here are the e-mail addresses to send letters to:

Democrat and Chronicle:  Speakout@DemocratandChronicle.com
City Newspaper:  themail@rochester-citynews.com
Messenger-Post Newspapers:  post@mpnewspapers.com

*Respond to online comments at newspaper sites.  Yes, there are some "trolls" out there who do nothing but spew venom on these boards.  But don't be afraid of them, stand up to them!  You don't have to get in an argument with them, just state your opinion, put in a plug for Green Party candidate for Governor, Howie Hawkins and mention the campaign website.    You can ignore the haters.

*Howie's campaign is in full swing online.  Friend him on Facebook and follow him on Twitter.  Re-post and Re-tweet.  Let your friends know there's another candidate who isn't shouting, but who has solid ideas on how to fix New York.

*Talk to people about the campaign.  Whoever said that people shouldn't talk about politics was probably an incumbent.

We have to make this campaign go viral!!!

*******************************************************

Speaking of Howie Hawkins for Governor, we have some things coming up in October you should be aware of:

Howie will be in town Monday, October 11th and Tuesday October 12th.  The itinerary for his visit is getting finalized, but here is the information so far:

Monday:
Stopping to talk to Mott's workers in Williamson 5-6pm
Speaking at the Green Party of Monroe County's monthly meeting 7pm (place TBA)

Tuesday:
Early morning campaign activity (TBA)
Speaking at the JCC 9-10am
On Bob Smith, WXXI, 1370 Connection at Noon
Speaking engagement at the U of R, 5pm
Private House Party, 7pm

We're getting all the details finalized, but mark your calendars!!!

********************************************************

When was the last time you went trick-or-treating?  Well, this year GPoMC is going to turn it on its head a little.  How about some Reverse Trick-Or-Treating?  On Halloween, Sunday, October 31st, we are going to dress up in costume and go door-to-door.  Instead of asking for candy, we're going to give it out (along with a tasteful campaign palmcard).  If you're interested, let Dave know!

*******************************************************

Don't forget to contact the Monroe County Board of Elections if you'll need an absentee ballot.  The deadline is soon approaching.  The pdf of the application is at: http://www.monroecounty.gov/Image/AbsenteeApplication.pdf  or call the BOE at 585 753-1509.

*******************************************************

Have you heard our new Podcast?  It's called GreenLine and it's a half-hour talk show about subjects important to the Rochester area.  The latest GreenLine features KaeLyn Rich from Planned Parenthood.  Check it out at http://www.greenlinepodcast.com.

*******************************************************

Folks, don't let the craziness of Paladino and the arrogance of Cuomo get you down.  There is a real candidate who shares our values.  It's time to help Howie Hawkins for Governor.  Contribute, go door-to-door, make phone calls, go trick-or-treating, come to the monthly meeting on the 12th, write letters-to-the-editor.  Make a difference!

Green Party endorses the One Nation Working Together rally in Washington, DC on Oct. 2, for jobs, justice, education, and peace

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Green Party of the United States has endorsed the One Nation Working Together march and rally in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 2 for "Jobs, Justice and Education" (http://www.onenationworkingtogether.org/content/main).

Theresa El-Amin, national co-chair of the Green Party, will serve as the party's representative on the national steering committee of One Nation Working Together. The Green Party's liaison to the Peace Table will be George Martin, Wisconsin Green, member of the Green Party Black Caucus, and former national co-chair of United for Peace & Justice.

"Greens from all over the US will gather with many other organizations and movements on Oct. 2. We're at the Peace Table to let people know that trillions of dollars are being wasted on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that could be used for human needs in the US, especially green jobs, education, universal health care, and aid for people hit hard by the economic meltdown," said Ms. El-Amin.

The Green Party will be part of the Peace Contingent (http://www.onenationforpeace.org), which calls the rally "an opportunity to help millions of people understand how the struggle to end the wars and occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq is directly tied to the urgent need to re-direct this nation’s economic and social priorities," with a demand for deep cuts in military spending.

Greens call these goals consistent with the Green Party's own positions, which include ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, drastically reducing the military budget, creating millions of green jobs among other efforts to offset global warming, enacting Medicare For All (Single-Payer national health care), and protecting Social Security.

Green Party members across the country who can not travel to Washington, DC will participate in related Oct. 2 events in their areas.

Greens said that the One Nation Working Together unity statement shows the event's inclusiveness: "We are conservatives and moderates, progressives and liberals, non-believers and people of deep faith, united by escalating assaults on our reason, our environment, and our rights." (http://www.onenationworkingtogether.org/pages/mission)

"The Green Party's presence on Oct. 2 signals that there's hope for America. We'll be there to challenge the idea that our choice is limited to candidates and parties who support more war and more corporate power," said Jacqui Deveneau, chair of the York County Greens and Maine Green Independent Party delegate to the national Green Party (http://www.mainegreens.org).

GREEN PARTY OF MINNESOTA SUPPORTS PEACE ACTIVISTS RAIDED BY FBI

News that five homes of well-known peace activists in Minneapolis had been raided and searched by FBI agents yesterday morning brought expressions of outrage from members of the Green Party´s state coordinating committee. They voiced support for the Anti War Committee and other local groups with which the activists are associated. They believe that accusations of material aid to terrorism are intended to intimidate all who protest.

The suppression of democratic rights and the bogus use of terrorism charges continue to intensify under the Obama administration. A number of the activists also received subpoenas to testify at a Chicago grand jury. We will continue to support these activists as they face the grand jury process.

"Following upon the unjustified raids and arrests that took place in 2008, this action throws a threatening shadow over freedom of expression in our state -- as no doubt it was meant to do," says Andy Hamerlinck. He pointed out that empty charges of terrorism against the RNC 8 arrested in 2008 have long since been dropped. Only last week, all other charges were dropped against three of those defendants. "Now we have a new round of bullying."

New Podcast - Public Land Use & Regional Planning

This week our guest is Evan Lowenstein from Green Village Consulting.  We discuss some of the issues around the way we lay out our local community and how local municipalities need to work together for a more comprehensive approach to planning.  We also discuss how to affect zoning in your area and ways to incorporate agriculture into our urban areas.

Post-show Note:  We ran out of time, but Evan also advises everyone to check out Empire State Future for more information on land use at the state level.

You can listen to the show using our player in the right column, or you can download the show at www.greenlinepodcast.com.  (We should be available soon at iTunes)

Update - We Have Lawn Signs!

Yes, that's right. We have 35, Union Made, Hawkins for Governor lawn signs ready to go up once the primary election is over. We may be able to get more, but for right now, we have 35 that we would like to get in as many high visibility places as possible. If your house is one and you'd like a Hawkins for Governor lawn sign, please let us know ASAP!!!

Don't forget to spread the word about our candidates. E-mail, Facebook, the works! The Green Party is constantly uploading videos of Howie and all the other candidates on issues that are important to us. http://www.gpnys.com.

The campaign also needs money for more lawn signs, ads, bumper stickers ,etc. You can contribute at the state website as well.

Thanks to everyone who came out for the Labor Day Parade! We had a blast reminding everyone which party truly supports labor, including the striking workers at Motts.

Get ready for our next big holiday activity. Who likes Halloween? We're gearing up for a special Halloween activity to help our candidates as well as the local party. Stay tuned!

===================================================

We've just started our mission of going door-to-door to talk to every registered Green in Monroe County. Would you like to help? If you have a Saturday or Sunday afternoon free, join us in helping spread the word about getting our ballot status back and getting more Greens involved in the democratic (small d) process. E-mail or call for more info.

==================================================

What else can you do to help promote the Green Party and our candidates?

*Have a house party.
*Hand out campaign literature at the public market or other farmer's market.
*Talk to your friends, family and neighbors about the Green Party.
*Write letters to the editor or write comments on articles online about Howie Hawkins, the Green slate and the local Green Party.

=================================================

Why is a vibrant, active Green Party so important? It was just brought to our attention that from 2005-2009, 54% of all elections in Monroe County went uncontested. Only one party showed up. It is time for a true alternative to what we have!

Responding to President Obama's address to the nation, Greens demand real peace, not just partial troop draw-down, and urge protest against 'mercenary

Green Party Speakers Bureau: Greens available to speak on foreign policy http://www.gp.org/speakers/speakers-foreign-policy.php

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Green Party of the United States responded to President Obama's Oval Office address to the nation on Tuesday, August 31, with a call for Americans who oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to press for a complete withdrawal of US forces from both countries and a halt to attacks inside Pakistan's borders.

"When President Obama says we're turning the page, we're really moving to the next page of war without end. It would be a mistake for Americans who desire peace to let the President off the hook after Tuesday's speech," said Anthony Gronowicz, New York Green candidate for the US House, 7th Congressional District (Bronx/Queens, New York) and a member of the Green Party's International Committee (http://www.gp.org/committees/intl).

Green Party leaders listed reasons for renewed protest against the Obama Administration's military policies:

50,000 military personnel, rechristened non-combat 'advisors,' will remain in Iraq, along with a large number of private contractors (over 200,000 as of last month). The Iraq War has entered a new phase: occupation by largely mercenary forces to protect US interests, especially control over Iraqi oil resources. Skepticism remains that US combat in Iraq will cease, given the destabilization caused by the war. Past US 'advisors' in southeast Asia, Latin America, and other regions have been used for belligerent purposes (e.g., Vietnam, El Salvador) and regime change (Iran, Guatemala) rather than for peace.

The Democratic White House and Congress have continued to pump up the military budget, while seeking cuts in human services. Until military spending is cut drastically and the money is redirected to human needs and action against global warming, President Obama's stated goal of refocusing on domestic issues remains a hollow promise. (See "Greens call for a new kind of national defense: defense against catastrophic climate change," Green Party press release, August 6, 2010, http://www.gp.org/press/pr-national.php?ID=336)

The US owes the people of Iraq a sincere apology and recompense after an invasion launched in 2003 for false reasons: nonexistent WMDs, lies about nuclear materials and Iraqi involvement in the 9/11 attacks. The aim was to topple a murderous tyrant, but the US has not acknowledged its own role in propping up Saddam Hussein during the 1980s. The Iraq War resulted in hundreds of thousands of dead civilians, many more maimed, millions displaced, shattered infrastructure, and lingering effects from extremely toxic depleted uranium and white phosphorous weapons used by US forces.

US troops who fought in the war and the families of those who gave their lives also deserve an apology and restitution including full health care for service members, especially for those who have suffered physical and mental trauma.

President Obama has escalated the war in Afghanistan, expanding it into Pakistan, with thousands of civilian casualties. The US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, threats against Iran (and support for Israel's threats), and military aid for Israel's assaults on Palestinians have been interpreted by many nations as a greater war against Islam. (See "Greens urge Congress to pass the Kucinich-Paul bill for withdrawal of US troops from Pakistan, citing Wikileaks revelations," Green Party release, July 27, 2010, http://www.gp.org/press/pr-national.php?ID=335)

The threats against Iran demonstrate that President Obama has embraced the Bush-Cheney neocon doctrine of preemptive aggression against countries at peace with the US.

The Obama Administration has refused to investigate and prosecute Bush-Cheney officials for abuses of power and war crimes: massive deception; manipulating intelligence; authorizing extraordinary rendition and torture. President Obama has maintained warrantless surveillance of US citizens, surpassed President Bush in his pursuit of whistleblowers, and added extra-judicial killing of targeted US citizens to the list of assaults on the US Constitution. Congress has not repealed or amended the USA Patriot Act.
