WASHINGTON, DC -- Cynthia McKinney is scheduled to arrive at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, DC, this morning (Tuesday, July 7) following her detention in an Israeli prison during the past week along with others in the 'Free Gaza 21'.

Ms. McKinney's flight (American - El Al Airlines 8139 from New York, following a flight from Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv) will arrive at 11:55 am ET.

Reporters are invited to meet with Ms. McKinney, a former member of Congress from Georgia and the Green Party's 2008 presidential nominee, upon her arrival at the airport. Interviews can also be arranged: call Don DeBar at 914-945-0815.

Cynthia McKinney and 20 other human rights advocates involved in the Free Gaza Movement (http://www.freegaza.org), including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire, were on board the Spirit of Humanity to deliver medical supplies, construction materials, and toys to Gaza when the boat was intercepted and seized by Israeli gunboats last Monday.

The actions of the Israeli navy were illegal and constitute an act of piracy, since the relief boat was in international waters. After the boat was captured, the passengers were detained in a prison in Ramla, Israel.

Late last week, Israeli authorities pressed Ms. McKinney to sign a statement in Hebrew (which Ms. McKinney does not speak) that allegedly declared that the Spirit of Humanity was trespassing in Israeli waters and violating Israeli law. Ms. McKinney refused to sign the statement. As a result of her refusal, Ms. McKinney was told that her detention would last three more days. On Sunday, the US embassy in Tel Aviv confirmed that McKinney and some others were moved to the Ben Gurion International Airport in preparation for their deportation.

Members and supporters of the Free Gaza 21 have expressed concern about some of the human rights activists still held in Israel. According to recent communications, Mairead Maguire had initially chosen to stay in the Ramla prison in solidarity with Muslim members of the Free Gaza 21 from Yemen, Jordon, the United Kingdom, Scotland, Palestine, and Denmark, but a Haaretz (Israel) news article has stated that Ms. Maguire would be deported (http://wfww.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1098033.html). According to later messages, the activists from the UK and Scotland are also being deported.

Cynthia McKinney has stressed that President Obama had urged delivery of medical and other supplies to Gaza in the wake of Israel's brutal invasion last December and January. Last Thursday, the Green Party published the following statement from Ms. McKinney, which was communicated by phone from her cell in Ramla:

"We were in international waters on a boat delivering humanitarian aid to people in Gaza when the Israeli Navy ships surrounded us and illegally threatened us, dismantled our navigation equipment, boarded and confiscated the ship. All of us on board were then taken off the ship and into custody, and brought into Israel and imprisoned. Immigration officials in Israel said they did not want to keep us, but we remain imprisoned. State Department and White House officials have not effected our release or taken a strong public stance to condemn the illegal actions of the Israeli Navy of enforcing a blockade of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians of Gaza, a blockade that has been condemned by President Obama."

In another communication, Ms. McKinney said, "It is incumbent upon President Obama to stand by his reported policy of easing the Gazan blockade and of allowing building supplies, medical supplies, and school supplies to go through," adding "we call upon President Obama to use the highest level of his authority to transmit this message to the Israelis."

Audio clips of calls from Cynthia McKinney have been posted on line (http://www.WBAIX.org). For further information and updates, see the Free Gaza Movement web site (http://www.freegaza.org). The Green Party of the United States called for the immediate release of the Free Gaza 21 and for permission for the Spirit of Humanity to resume its delivery of urgently needed medical and other supplies to Gaza (http://www.gp.org/press/pr-national.php?ID=230).

Green leaders have urged party members and others concerned about the situation to call the White House, the US State Department, and members of Congress. A daily vigil for the Free Gaza 21 and for Palestinians suffering the effects of the Israeli occupation and the invasion of Gaza is continuing each evening at the Van Ness Metro Station (Red Line) near the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, from 5 to 6 pm.

On July 2, Democracy Now! interviewed Ms. Maguire from her prison cell (http://www.democracynow.org/2009/7/2/nobel_peace_laureate_mairead_maguire_speaks).

Former U.S. Congresswoman speaks out of her jail in Israel
Saturday, 04 July 2009 12:13 Added by PT Editor Pal Tel Admin

Palestine, July 4, 2009 (Pal Telegraph) - This is Cynthia McKinney and I'm speaking from an Israeli prison cellblock in Ramle. [I am one of] the Free Gaza 21, human rights activists currently imprisoned for trying to take medical supplies to Gaza, building supplies - and even crayons for children, I had a suitcase full of crayons for children.

While we were on our way to Gaza the Israelis threatened to fire on our boat, but we did not turn around. The Israelis high-jacked and arrested us because we wanted to give crayons to the children in Gaza. We have been detained, and we want the people of the world to see how we have been treated just because we wanted to deliver humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. At the outbreak of Israel's Operation 'Cast Lead' [in December 2008], I boarded a Free Gaza boat with one day's notice and tried, as the US representative in a multi-national delegation, to deliver 3 tons of medical supplies to an already besieged and ravaged Gaza.

During Operation Cast Lead, U.S.-supplied F-16's rained hellfire on a trapped people. Ethnic cleansing became full scale outright genocide. U.S.-supplied white phosphorus, depleted uranium, robotic technology, DIME weapons, and cluster bombs - new weapons creating injuries never treated before by Jordanian and Norwegian doctors. I was later told by doctors who were there in Gaza during Israel's onslaught that Gaza had become Israel's veritable weapons testing laboratory, people used to test and improve the kill ratio of their weapons.

The world saw Israel's despicable violence thanks to al-Jazeera Arabic and Press TV that broadcast in English. I saw those broadcasts live and around the clock, not from the USA but from Lebanon, where my first attempt to get into Gaza had ended because the Israeli military rammed the boat I was on in international water ... It's a miracle that I'm even here to write about my second encounter with the Israeli military, again a humanitarian mission aborted by the Israeli military.

The Israeli authorities have tried to get us to confess that we committed a crime ... I am now known as Israeli prisoner number 88794. How can I be in prison for collecting crayons to kids?

Zionism has surely run out of its last legitimacy if this is what it does to people who believe so deeply in human rights for all that they put their own lives on the line for someone else's children. Israel is the fullest expression of Zionism, but if Israel fears for its security because Gaza's children have crayons then not only has Israel lost its last shred of legitimacy, but Israel must be declared a failed state.

I am facing deportation from the state that brought me here at gunpoint after commandeering our boat. I was brought to Israel against my will. I am being held in this prison because I had a dream that Gaza's children could color & paint, that Gaza's wounded could be healed, and that Gaza's bombed-out houses could be rebuilt.

But I've learned an interesting thing by being inside this prison. First of all, it's incredibly black: populated mostly by Ethiopians who also had a dream ... like my cellmates, one who is pregnant. They are all are in their twenties. They thought they were coming to the Holy Land. They had a dream that their lives would be better ... The once proud, never colonized Ethiopia [has been thrown into] the back pocket of the United States, and become a place of torture, rendition, and occupation. Ethiopians must free their country because superpower politics [have] become more important than human rights and self-determination.

My cellmates came to the Holy Land so they could be free from the exigencies of superpower politics. They committed no crime except to have a dream. They came to Israel because they thought that Israel held promise for them. Their journey to Israel through Sudan and Egypt was arduous.

I can only imagine what it must have been like for them. And it wasn't cheap. Many of them represent their family's best collective efforts for self-fulfillment. They made their way to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. They got their yellow paper of identification. They got their certificate for police protection. They are refugees from tragedy, and they made it to Israel only after they arrived Israel told them "there is no UN in Israel."

The police here have license to pick them up & suck them into the black hole of a farce for a justice system. These beautiful, industrious and proud women represent the hopes of entire families. The idea of Israel tricked them and the rest of us. In a widely propagandized slick marketing campaign, Israel represented itself as a place of refuge and safety for the world's first Jews and Christian. I too believed that marketing and failed to look deeper.

The truth is that Israel lied to the world. Israel lied to the families of these young women. Israel lied to the women themselves who are now trapped in Ramle's detention facility. And what are we to do? One of my cellmates cried today. She has been here for 6 months. As an American, crying with them is not enough. The policy of the United States must be better, and while we watch President Obama give 12.8 trillion dollars to the financial elite of the United States it ought now be clear that hope, change, and 'yes we can' were powerfully presented images of dignity and self-fulfillment, individually and nationally, that besieged people everywhere truly believed in.

It was a slick marketing campaign as slickly put to the world and to the voters of America as was Israel's marketing to the world. It tricked all of us but, more tragically, these young women.

We must cast an informed vote about better candidates seeking to represent us. I have read and re-read Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's letter from a Birmingham jail. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined that I too would one day have to do so. It is clear that taxpayers in Europe and the U.S. have a lot to atone for, for what they've done to others around the world.

What an irony! My son begins his law school program without me because I am in prison, in my own way trying to do my best, again, for other people's children. Forgive me, my son. I guess I'm experiencing the harsh reality which is why people need dreams. [But] I'm lucky. I will leave this place. Has Israel become the place where dreams die?

Ask the people of Palestine. Ask the stream of black and Asian men whom I see being processed at Ramle. Ask the women on my cellblock. [Ask yourself:] what are you willing to do?

Let's change the world together & reclaim what we all need as human beings: Dignity. I appeal to the United Nations to get these women of Ramle, who have done nothing wrong other than to believe in Israel as the guardian of the Holy Land, resettled in safe homes. I appeal to the United State's Department of State to include the plight of detained UNHCR-certified refugees in the Israel country report in its annual human rights report. I appeal once again to President Obama to go to Gaza: send your special envoy, George Mitchell there, and to engage Hamas as the elected choice of the Palestinian people.

I dedicate this message to those who struggle to achieve a free Palestine, and to the women I've met at Ramle. This is Cynthia McKinney, July 2nd 2009, also known as Ramle prisoner number 88794.

Texas Greens will participate in a press conference on the Free Gaza 21 in San Antonio on Friday, July 3

WASHINGTON, DC -- Former US Representative and 2008 Green presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney has issued a statement on the seizure of the Free Gaza Movement's 'Spirit of Humanity' relief boat by Israeli gunboats in international waters on Monday.

Ms. McKinney and 18 other members of the 'Free Gaza 21' are currently being held in Givon prison in Ramla, Israel. Two of the Free Gaza 21 have been released.

Cynthia McKinney delivered the following statement by phone:

Ms. McKinney and other Free Gaza 21 members have refused to sign a self-incriminating 'deportation form' stating that the Spirit of Humanity was violating the Israeli blockade and trespassing Israeli territorial waters by attempting to deliver supplies to Gaza. In fact, the Spirit of Humanity was in international waters when it was illegally seized by the Israeli navy in an act of piracy. The imprisonment of the Free Gaza 21 and the Israeli navy's jamming the boat's navigation system are further violations of international laws are Israel's blockade of Gaza, occupation of Palestinian territories, and violations of Palestinians' human rights.

The boat was on a voyage to deliver medical supplies, cement, and children's toys to Gaza following an appeal by President Obama for supplies to be sent to Gaza. Because of their refusal to sign the form, Israeli authorities will reportedly hold Ms. McKinney and other Free Gaza 21 members in the prison for three more days before the Israeli Government can either choose to release them or continue to detain them.

In a phone call with WBAIX from the prison (listen at http://www.WBAIX.org), Cynthia McKinney said, "It is incumbent upon President Obama to stand by his reported policy of easing the Gazan blockade and of allowing building supplies, medical supplies, and school supplies to go through," adding "we call upon President Obama to use the highest level of his authority to transmit this message to the Israelis."

Along with Ms. McKinney, Nobel laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire is among the Free Gaza 21's international list of human rights activists. (Democracy Now! interview with Ms. Maguire from her prison cell: http://www.democracynow.org/2009/7/2/nobel_peace_laureate_mairead_maguire_speaks)

The Green Party of the United States has called for the immediate release of the Free Gaza 21 and for permission for the Spirit of Humanity to resume its delivery of urgently needed medical and other supplies to Gaza, which is suffering the effects of a brutal invasion by Israel last December and January (http://www.gp.org/press/pr-national.php?ID=230).

Green leaders have urged party members and other concerned about the situation to call the White House, the US State Department, and members of Congress.

Texas Greens (http://www.bexargreens.org / http://txgreens.org/drupal), in coalition with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (San Antonio), Muslim Public Affairs Council, Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, and Fellowship of Reconciliation, will hold a press conference on the Free Gaza 21 on Friday, July 3, noon at the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center (http://www.esperanzacenter.org), 922 San Pedro Avenue in San Antonio. The contact for the press conference is Kat Swift, who ran for the Green presidential nomination in 2008. Ms. Swift can be reached at 210-471-1791 and kat@txgreens.org.

Green Party responds to Bill Maher's call for "an actual progressive party": We're here already!

A Real Party for 'Real Time': Greens send an open letter to Maher

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Green Party has sent an open letter to Bill Maher after a June 19 broadcast of 'Real Time' in which Mr. Maher said "[W]hat we need is an actual progressive party to represent the millions of Americans who aren't being served by the Democrats. Because, bottom line, Democrats are the new Republicans."

The Green Party's reply to Mr. Maher: "Hey, Bill, we're over here! What you described is the GREEN PARTY! We already exist!"

The progressive party sought by Bill Maher describes the Green Party: "Shouldn't there be one party that unambiguously supports cutting the military budget, a party that is straight up in favor of gun control, gay marriage, higher taxes on the rich, universal health care -- legalizing pot -- and steep, direct taxing of polluters?"

The open letter urges Mr. Maher to acknowledge the Green Party and have a Green candidate or leader on the show. The text of the letter is appended below.

The Green Party is currently preparing for its annual national meeting, to take place in Durham, North Carolina, from July 23 to July 26 (http://www.gp.org/2009-ANM http://ncgreenparty.org/2009-ANM.html). Reporters are invited to cover the meeting (http://www.gp.org/forms/media).

"America's First Party" An Open Letter to Bill Maher from the Green Party

Dear Mr. Maher,

We were thrilled to hear you talk about us when you discussed the need for a new party -- a "first party" -- during the June 19 broadcast of 'Real Time.'

The only part you left out were the words "Green Party."

Here's what you said:

"We don't need a third party. We need a first party. You go to the polls and your choices are the guy who voted for the first Wall Street bailout, or the guy who voted for the next ten."

"Shouldn't there be one party that unambiguously supports cutting the military budget, a party that is straight up in favor of gun control, gay marriage, higher taxes on the rich, universal health care -- legalizing pot -- and steep, direct taxing of polluters? These aren't radical ideas. A majority of Americans are either already for them or would be if they were properly argued and defended."

"[W]hat we need is an actual progressive party to represent the millions of Americans who aren't being served by the Democrats. Because, bottom line, Democrats are the new Republicans."

Hey, Bill, we're over here! What you described is the GREEN PARTY! We already exist!

Maybe you forgot about us because the major media have an aversion to mentioning the Green Party and our candidates. Maybe the FCC has banned "Green Party" along with the late George Carlin's seven dirty words, "Chomsky," "End the Drug War," and other language that offends delicate sensibilities.

For the major networks, and apparently PBS and NPR too, the very idea of more than two candidates in an election makes talking heads explode.

If Green candidates started getting elected to higher office, the radical ideas that aren't really radical would get a fair hearing and a chance of passage.

Imagine if a few Greens got seated in Congress. Greens don't take corporate contributions, so they'd be immune to the influence of Exxon-Mobil, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Raytheon, Monsanto, etc. When Rep. Nancy Pelosi sends out orders not to seek a probe of Bush-Cheney officials who authorized torture dungeons, Greens could tell her to take a hike.

A few Green congressional victories would cause a seismic shock to the political landscape. Democrats would no longer have Republicans as their sole competition. The scope of national debate would no longer be Dems on the left, Repubs on the right, a phony middle ground between them, and a narrow range of political ideas comparable to the corner grocery limiting your choice of beverage to Coke or Pepsi.

With some Greens in Congress:

Democrats couldn't pretend to be the antiwar party while voting for more war funding.

Single-payer national health care would be on the table and might even pass. President Obama and most Democrats already know single-payer is the best proposal. But they feel compelled to appease the health insurance, pharmaceutical, and other lobbies and find common ground with Republicans who believe the free market has sufficient mojo to cure every illness and injury.

We'd hear the truth: that "emissions trading" is a license for corporate polluters to keep polluting, that "clean coal" is a plot to turn West Virginia into a crater, that the trillion-dollar Wall Street bailout and confiscation of savings and pension money are the greatest transfer of wealth from working people to big banks in history. There's a bipartisan consensus that corporate profit margins always take precedent over Americans facing financial ruin over a health emergency or credit card debt or a mortgage or a lost job. Whenever you hear the word "bipartisan" on the evening news, check the silverware.

What are we going to do about this situation, Bill? If you really want a "first party" for America, will you throw us a bone on your show? Will you have a Green candidate or Green leader on once in a while? (Ralph Nader doesn't count -- he's not a member of the Green Party.)

How about Rev. Billy Talen of the Church of Life After Shopping (http://www.revbilly.com)? Rev. Billy is now a Green candidate for Mayor of New York City (http://www.voterevbilly.org).

Rosa Clemente, our 2008 vice-presidential candidate, said that the Green Party "is more than an alternative, it's an imperative." Based on your comments, Bill, it sounds like you might agree with Rosa.

We look forward to hearing back from you. You can see what we're up to on our web site (http://www.gp.org).

Sincerely,

The Green Party
