The Green Party of the 21st century continues the Populist's fight for citizen empowerment and progressive reforms at all levels today.

Green Party Co-Chair receives award for leadership in drug law reform

The Green Party congratulates Connecticut Green and newly elected Green Party of the United States Steering Committee Co-Chair Clifford Thornton on an award he received from the Drug Policy Alliance http://www.drugpolicy.org for his leadership in the movement to reform drug laws.

Mr. Thornton, co-founder of the drug law reform organization Efficacy, Inc. http://www.Efficacy-online.org, is a national co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. In 2006, he ran on the Green Party ticket for governor of Connecticut.

"Cliff Thornton's work for the reform of US drug policy is in line with Green opposition to the War on Drugs, unjust and draconian drug laws, and the use of drug laws to fill up prison cells with black, brown, poor, and young Americans. We're proud that Cliff is a member of the Green Party," said Alfred Molison, co-chair of the Green Party's national Black Caucus http://gpblackcaucus.blogspot.com.

Head-Roc Gets Greens behind BALL in ‘08

Head-Roc Continues To Get Greens behind BALL in ‘08
The Cali Outreach Tour Continues for Jared Ball for President in ‘08

Head-Roc Continues To Get Greens behind BALL in ‘08 Oakland, CA - After addressing issues of the criminal justice system and the need for wholesale reform and changes in US incarceration policy at a fundraiser for the San Francisco BayView Newspaper Prisoners Fund, www.jaredball.com flew back to the Washington DC area to tend to a family emergency.

Seeing the importance of California Green Party members, Head-Roc, co-campaign manager and independent hiphop artist, is continuing the Jared Ball/Capitol Resistance California Tour. Expressing his commitment to deliver the campaign’s message of hope and inspiration Head-Roc stated “I’m excited about continuing the wonderful fellowship with California Greens as part of Dr. Ball’s efforts to earn the Green Party’s Presidential nomination, and continue to deliver the candidate’s message of hope”.

Head-Roc notes that Ball’s message of radical inclusion and grassroots political empowerment that engages audiences via their “Capitol Resistance” presentation can play an integral role as a Party building tool that promotes participation in truly progressive/radical political activities amongst the disenfranchised and disaffected “Communities of Culture” not just in California, but across the United States of America.”

FINAL CALIFORNIA TOUR DATES AND CITIES:

* Los Angeles Peace Center: Dec. 19th 7pm, 8124 W. Third Street (near Crescent Heights) Los Angeles, CA / 323-651-5539. Parking behind building - enter through alley. http://losangelesgreens.org
* Interview with Akinyele Sadiq of SF Public Access Television: Dec. 21st in San Francisco

After completing radio interviews in San Luis Obispo and on his way to a key outreach event at the Peace Center in Los Angeles on December 19th. Head-Roc will return to the Bay Area for media opportunities and outreach on the 20th.

“The fact is that our Party needs to grow in numbers and ways that will nullify the scandalous acts of our elitist corporate ruled US political system makes it incumbent upon those already entrenched in progressive life to pursue investment in new avenues of outreach to our brothers and sisters living in struggle,” added Head-Roc who is currently recording a follow up to his 2005 release entitled “Negrophobia.”

Although now back on the East Coast, Jared Ball, a communications professor at Morgan State University in Baltimore, and Pacifica radio host at WPFW in Washington, D.C. has continued to do interviews with California media. He also points to a greater message that is less about him and more about creating a legitimate and inclusive alternative to the current political parties that speaks for those generally forgotten.

“We will continue to both represent and present our “Capitol Resistance” community outreach methods to fellow Green Party sisters and brothers as a viable way to build the Party,” said Ball.

Cynthia McKinney Announces Presidential Campaign
Video News Release Available Today at 6 PM

Cynthia McKinney, a former six-term Congresswoman and an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq, today officially launched her campaign as a Green Party candidate for President.

In a video news release, McKinney says "the Republicans have deceived us; the Democrats have failed us. It is time for a new beginning: A time for hope to rise from the ashes of despair."

McKinney, a former Democrat from Georgia, was one of only three members of Congress to vote "yes" on a House Resolution in 2005 calling for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. One of her last acts in office was introducing Articles of Impeachment naming George Bush, Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice.

According to McKinney: "It is time to break the vicious cycle where the poor go to war and veterans come home wounded and ignored."

McKinney supports universal, single-payer health care; fair trade; and has been an unrelenting advocate for Hurricane Katrina survivors. No stranger to controversy and unafraid of speaking truth to power, McKinney has demanded that the Bush Administration tell the American people what the Administration knew about the events leading up to 9/11 and when they knew it.

McKinney's announcement ends months of speculation about her plans. McKinney has been traveling constantly and meeting with Green Party members and other activists across the country who have been encouraging her to seek the Presidency.

More information about McKinney's campaign including a copy of her video statement, are available by linking to: www.runcynthiarun.org.

Members of the media are urged to request a copy of the high resolution version of this VNR, suitable for broadcast and cablecast at:

Greens versus Green-washed: Mesplay on the Bali Climate Change meeting

Press release from Kent Mesplay, Green candidate
for President of the United States
http://www.mesplay.org

Greens versus Green-washed: Mesplay on the Bali
meeting

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
meeting in Bali is drawing to a close. While the
rest of the world is determined to do something
about Climate Change, the United States under the
Bush Administration continues to practice divide
and conquer tactics between countries in order to
avoid taking any responsibility for ourselves.
They use the word "consensus" in press
conferences and then try to undermine the
consensus that already exists.

This administration has been treating Al Qaeda as
a security threat and ignores the security threat
from an entire planet whose populations,
especially those of the poorest countries, have
been destabilized by rising ocean levels, failing
crops, drought and floods. That is the real
security issue of the 21st Century and it cannot
be solved by 19th Century policies. The
beginnings of this are already clear, as the US
Dept. of Agriculture announced this week that we
have had significant falls in the stocks of corn,
wheat and soybeans, along with an increased
demand.

The House Oversight Committee (Rep. Henry Waxman,
Chair) has just released a major report that
details exactly how far the Bush Administration
has gone with their political interference with
the work on climate science. As a scientist
myself, one whose current work deals with air
quality control, I am appalled that our
government has perpetrated this deceit on the
American Public. Under a Green Party
administration, there would be two standards: are
we getting the science right and are we being
just in our use.

The scientific consensus is clear. The only lack
is a political consensus. Even as the Bush
Administration's performance in Bali brings shame
to this country, the Congressional Democrats are
trying to green-wash themselves, hiding bad
policies behind carefully scripted language. The
Energy Bill (HR 6) recently passed by the House
of Representatives does contain some improvements
such as an increase in Corporate Average Fuel
Standards (CAFE) for both cars and trucks; but
not until 2020. It also calls for a three-fold
increase in the renewable fuel standard which
will create a greater demand for ethanol from
corn, itself a worse producer of green house
gases than the petroleum product it would
replace.

Even Sen. Obama cannot help but propose
legislation that would "require the production of
18 billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2016".
The words he wraps around it are all about
boosting our rural economy. It is just about
winning votes in the Iowa primary and gaining the
support of major agri-business contributors.
Diversion of even more corn from our dwindling
supply for the production of ethanol will drive
up the prices of almost all our corn-derived
groceries: meat, milk and many packaged products
containing "high fructose corn syrup."

I want an improved political process that allows
good candidates to run so that we have public
officials who treat science with respect and who
actually work to make us more secure rather than
catering to their favorite businesses.

It is for lack of political will that we do not
have solar and wind as the back-bone of all
energy production in this nation. If we take
away the subsidies given to coal and nuclear,
allow an even handed, true costing of all energy
options, we will no longer be proposing new coal
or nuclear power facilities. Once we develop the
mind-set of every structure being designed for
energy efficiency and becoming its own power
plant we will not need those new plants.

There is now a proposed Science Debate 2008. I
would relish the opportunity to challenge any of
the other candidates. The debate we need is over
energy. The energy we need will come when one
joins the Green Revolution. Register Green and
Vote Green. Just be wary of green-washed
candidates.

On the eve of a major US House hearing on HR 40, Greens make the case for reparations for the descendants of slaves

GREEN PARTY OF THE UNITED STATES

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

Scott McLarty, Media Coordinator, 202-518-5624, mclarty@greens.org
Starlene Rankin, Media Coordinator, 916-995-3805, starlene@gp.org

WASHINGTON, DC -- On the eve of a major House hearing on the subject, Green Party leaders called for reparations for the descendants of slaves and a national discussion on how reparations should be implemented.

The hearing will take place on Thursday, December 6, before the United States House of Representatives Judiciary Committee in the Rayburn Building in Washington, DC. Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), chair of the committee, is the sponsor of HR 40, the Reparations Study Bill .

"The most effective way to show the nation's regret for centuries of stolen labor is to make restitution," said Alfred Molison, co-chair of the Green Party's Black Caucus and a Texas Green. Mr. Molison noted that the Green Party of Texas and the Harris County Green Party have adopted a statement calling for the study of reparations as part of their platforms.

"The history of Jim Crow laws, enforced poverty and segregation, and the denial of human rights show that the ideology on which slavery was founded didn't disappear after emancipation, with lasting effects on the lives of African Americans. Red-lining in housing and job discrimination occurred within recent memory, persisting even after the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The targeting of black people for incarceration in the War on Drugs fills up cells and provides dirt-cheap labor for the prison industry and associated corporate contractors -- a new form of slavery. The obstruction of African American votes in the 2000 and 2004 elections and the treatment of black people in the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina reveal the same ideology at work," added Mr. Molison.

The Green Party -- unlike the Democratic and Republican parties -- endorses reparations in its national platform .

In 2006, Greens expressed their support for a lawsuit that would hold Brown Brothers Harriman, a major US financial corporation, liable for its involvement in the slave trade .

"The call for reparations is a call to revive the unfinished work of the Reconstruction after the Civil War," and to correct the abuse of America's criminal justice system in the form of the War on Drugs," said Clifford Wallace Thornton, Jr, national co-chair of the Green Party, Connecticut Green Party co-chair, and co-founder of Efficacy, Inc. . "The Reconstruction was interrupted when Southern states began to pass anti-black Jim Crow laws, while at the same time the Supreme Court granted corporations rights as persons under the 14th Amendment, which was originally passed to protect freed slaves."

"The Green Party seeks to restore human rights where they belong -- to humans. Reparations were part of the Reconstruction, and Greens insist that reparations are essential today in the movement for equality, human rights, and democracy," said Mr. Thornton.

Draft Nader

We're hoping to hear a decision from Ralph Nader in the next week or two about his intentions to run for President. Ralph Nader was the Green Party's candidate in 1996 and in 2000.

In the meantime you can check out the Draft Nader website.
http://www.draftnader.org/

Ralph Nader is a consumer advocate, lawyer, and author.

He was born in Winsted, Connecticut on February 27, 1934.

In 1955 Ralph Nader received an AB magna cum laude from Princeton University, and in 1958 he received a LLB with distinction from Harvard University.

His career began as a lawyer in Hartford, Connecticut in 1959 and from 1961-63 he lectured on history and government at the University of Hartford.

In 1965-66 he received the Nieman Fellows award and was named one of ten Outstanding Young Men of Year by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1967. Between 1967-68 he returned to Princeton as a lecturer, and he continues to speak at colleges and universities across the United States.

In his career as consumer advocate he founded many organizations including the Center for Study of Responsive Law, the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), the Center for Auto Safety, Public Citizen, Clean Water Action Project, the Disability Rights Center, the Pension Rights Center, the Project for Corporate Responsibility and The Multinational Monitor(a monthly magazine).

Ralph Nader was the Green Party nominee for president in 1996 and 2000, he also ran for president in 2004 as an independent.

An Unreasonable Man on PBS!

"An Unreasonable Man" will debut on the PBS program Independent Lens Tuesday, December 18th at 9:00pm in most markets. It will be repeated in various markets through December 24th. Check your local listings. Copy these links into your browser to go to the Independent Lens website for a sneak preview and educational materials connected with the broadcast.

http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/unreasonableman/

In 1966, General Motors, the most powerful corporation in the world, sent private investigators to dig up dirt on an obscure thirty-two year old public interest lawyer named Ralph Nader, who had written a book critical of one of their cars, the Corvair. The scandal that ensued after the smear campaign was revealed launched Ralph Nader into national prominence and established him as one of the most admired Americans and the leader of the modern Consumer Movement. Over the next thirty years and without ever holding public office, Nader built a legislative record that is the rival of any contemporary president. Many things we take for granted including seat belts, airbags, product labeling, no nukes, even the free ticket you get after being bumped from an overbooked flight are largely due to the efforts of Ralph Nader and his citizen groups. Yet today, when most people hear the name "Ralph Nader," they think of the man who gave the country George W. Bush. As a result, after sustaining his popularity and effectiveness over an unprecedented amount of time, he has become a pariah even among former friends and allies. How did this happen? Is he really to blame for George W. Bush? Who has stuck by him and who has abandoned him? Has our democracy become a consumer fraud? After being so right for so many years, how did he seem to go so wrong? With the help of exciting graphics, rare archival footage and over forty on-camera interviews conducted over the past two years, "An Unreasonable Man" traces the life and career of Ralph Nader, one of the most unique, important, and controversial political figures of the past half century.

An open letter to all Green Party members from the Jared Ball campaign.

Dear Fellow Greens,
We embarked on this campaign which put forward Jared Ball, an African American college professor who was born in Washington D.C. and is a Desert Storm veteran, for the Green Party's Presidential nomination as an organizing effort to bring in new constituencies to the Green Party. It is our goal to create through the Green Party a political movement that extends across race and class to provide a political voice for the diverse “True American Majority.”

We welcome all other Green Presidential candidates to partner with us in our efforts to grow the Green Party. The 2008 campaign season is our opportunity to show this country the many faces of the Green Party and the vibrant array of ideas that we bring to the table of determining Americas role in solving the problems of: mass incarceration, world hunger, global warming, quality accessible health care and education, and the creation of just equitable humane economic systems. As candidates working together we will raise the profile of our campaigns and assure that we have candidates on the ballot in all 51 states. We invite other Green Party candidates for president to join us in planning joint events with local candidates and activists who are working on anti-war or social justice issues. Together we will create a groundswell of interest in the Green Party and will show the mainstream candidates for the do nothing corporate shills that they are.

In addition we call out to all Greens asking you to come on board to help your Green Party Presidential candidates get out the word to all Green Party members and beyond. We and all the presidential campaigns need your help to assure that Greens and potential new Greens are well informed about their choices before deciding which candidate to support. We offer this campaign as an outreach tool, in particular as an outreach tool to Black and Latino communities and need the help of volunteers in each state to make this effort a success. Together we can grow the Green Party and assure that we come out of the 2008 election cycle stronger and better organized than we go into it.

Jared Ball, with DC-based artist and co-campaign manager Head-Roc and their “Capitol Resistance” campaign tour speaking truth to power while upsetting the set up is asking for your support and assistance in bringing us to your area. Schedules are tight and resources limited so lets get creative and pool our efforts to do regional events. If you would like to plan a Jared Ball “Capitol Resistance” event in your area please contact contact us.

DC Native Seeking to Remix Green Party in Run for
Nomination

LOCAL HIPHOP SCHOLAR AND RADIO HOST SEES RUN FOR
PRESIDENT AS WAY TO MOBILIZE HIPHOP COMMUNITY AND
EXPAND REACH OF GREEN PARTY TO GRASSROOTS
COMMUNITIES

CONTACT: Malik Russell, 202.271.0742

Washington, DC, November 30, 2007: Prior to
becoming the second African American male to
graduate with a PhD in journalism from the
University of Maryland at College Park, Jared
Ball <http://www.jaredball.com> determined that
his thesis would focus on what he coined "the
emancipatory mixtape."

Ball, saw how the popularity of hiphop mixtapes
distributed through an underground economy could
be utilized to mobilize African American youth
towards activism. Today, in running for the Green
Party nomination, he sees his campaign to expand
their reach of the Greens, relative to the major
political parties functioning similar to the
mixtape relative to products from the major music
labels.

"Our campaign, just like the mixtape, is designed
to reach the grassroots without corporate
backing," said Dr. Ball, professor of
communications at Morgan State University in
Baltimore, Maryland. "We hope to prove that a
message that addresses the issues of the poor,
disenfranchised without comprising to corporate
interests still resonates with people. It's not
just about ending the war in Iraq, it's about a
political will to apply the same type of energy
and resources to the problems of violence,
incarceration, unemployment and despair faced by
young people in America and around the world,"
added Ball.

The current host of the Jazz & Justice show on
Pacifica Radio's Washington DC station WPFW 89.3
FM <http://www.wpfw.org>, he also serves as
editor-at-large for the Words, Beats and life
Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture. Ball is joined
in his revolutionary campaign by DC native and
independent hiphop recording artist Head-Roc
<<http://www.head-roc.com>. According to
Head-Roc, who recently released his new album
"Negrophobia," this campaign is the proper
evolution of the hiphop community, particularly
those who grew up nodding their heads to groups
like Public Enemy, Tribe Called Quest, Gangstarr
and other politically conscious hiphop artists.

"There is still a lot of real hiphop out there,
unfortunately we don't get to hear anything but
the corporate controlled neo-materialistic stuff
on the radio," said Head-Roc. "Our campaign gives
both young and older progressive people, credible
visual references to hip-hop legends that they
automatically can get with and are nostalgic
for," he added.

Ball's campaign has earned enough signatures to
be on the ballot in Illinois and is mobilizing
support for an upcoming tour of California in
December. For many, this accomplishment done on a
shoestring budget with no corporate or big donor
help is a victory in itself. Yet others believe
it's even more than that and see it as a
watershed moment where the Hiphop Generation is
moving beyond societal-imposed limitations and
into realms that will redefine political
campaigns as we know them.

They've generated enough grassroots momentum and
belief in their potential for Anita Rios, the
former co-chair of the National Green Party, to
join them as the senior-campaign manager.

"Jared and Heady provide a meaningful twist to
political campaigning and we hope that this will
grow and change the way that politics is done so
as to change who does politics," remarked Rios.

For Ball, he recently became a father for the
second time this week, the run is more about
planting seeds for the younger generation
concerning what is possible and how we have a
right to determine who speaks for us and those
choices extend far beyond who the major parties
and corporations say we should vote for.

"The people in this country have a right to have
real choices, not a choice between the lesser of
two evils or choices dictated to them by the
wealthy. That's what I bring to the table, the
awareness that choice can exist," said Ball.
"This not only applies to the two main political
parties, but also to independent parties such as
the Green Party. Our eventual goal is to take the
Green party from just green to red, black, brown
and green."
