Why Green Is Good for Gays
Green Party reframes local, state debate

By KERRY ELEVELD
Monday, October 23, 2006

Alison Duncan is the other openly gay candidate seeking statewide office—running for Lt. Governor on the Green Party ticket. The Green Party does not receive as much attention as the Democrats or Republicans nor does it boast the money, but it may have claim as the party that has done the most to advance same-sex marriage in New York State to date.

The Green Party’s Jason West, Mayor of New Paltz, began performing same-sex weddings in February of 2004. He completed 25 before a judge issued a court order to stop him that eventually became a permanent injunction.

What most people don’t know about the Green Party is that local politicians like West are one of the most important reasons the party runs a statewide ticket. New York State law requires political parties to get at least 50,000 votes in the gubernatorial election in order to have a ballot line for the next four years.

That allows a party to run candidates in elections without having to gather 15,000 signatures in order to get them on the ballot—an effort Duncan said is nearly impossible to fund at the local level.

"That’s entirely the goal—to make it possible for people to win local offices," said Duncan. "Because once a Green candidate wins a local office, they really do start to make changes in their municipalities."

In New Paltz, West and his deputy mayor, Rebecca Rotzler, put in an artificial wetlands to process their sewage, which both saves money and is more environmentally friendly, Duncan said. They also got a grant to put in solar panels on the town hall, which powers the hall when it’s in use but sends energy back into the town grid then when they’re not using the building, thereby reducing energy costs for the town.

Across the board, Green Party candidates oppose the war in Iraq and they support universal health care, same-sex marriage, the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), and renewable energy sources.

But Duncan said the main thing that differentiates them from other candidates is they don’t take any corporate contributions, which also puts them at an intense funding disadvantage.

In the 32-day pre-general election filing for gubernatorial candidates, Democratic frontrunner Eliot Spitzer had about $8.6 million cash on hand, Republican John Faso had $970,000 cash on hand, and the Green Party’s Malachy McCourt had $1,123 in the bank.

Duncan said one of the things that has crystalized for her in this campaign, "is the real travesty of campaign financing both in our state and in our the country." This became abundantly clear to her as she was reading over the campaign finance filings of other candidates.

"Anyone who looks at that and sees the amount of money that comes from wealthy individuals and from corporations into a campaign, it really gives you a perspective on where the average voter is to a corporate candidate," said Duncan.

Duncan said the reason they don’t take corporate contributions is so they aren’t beholden to anyone’s special interests. "We can take much braver stances on issues," she said.

If elected, for instance, Duncan and McCourt would refuse to enforce Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the New York National Guard. "Lesbian, gay and trans and bisexual members of our National Guard should be able to serve openly and with dignity," Duncan said.

An even more unprecedented part of their platform includes bringing the New York National Guard home from Iraq and putting them to work cleaning up the state’s environment. "We’ve done a lot of research on how legally we would be able to do that," Duncan said. "The governor actually has a lot of control over the National Guard contrary to popular belief."

Getting a ballot line

The Green Party lost their ballot line in 2002 when they fell just short of 50,000 votes in the gubernatorial race. In order to get their candidates on the statewide ballot this year, they collected 30,000 signatures, twice the amount required.

They are also poised to get their ballot line back on November 7—a recent Zogby poll shows them polling at 5 percent statewide, which equates to about 200,000 votes. Duncan said her running mate for governor, Malachy McCourt, has been a big help in raising the profile of the campaign. McCourt is a well-known actor and the brother of writer Frank McCourt.

"It’s important for us to run a candidate with name recognition, because we need the 50,000 votes, and we don’t have a lot of money," Duncan said.

McCourt’s stage prowess has also been helpful on the trail, as he and Duncan teamed up for a statewide tour of his show "You Don’t Have to be Irish to Vote for Me." Duncan said she sings, McCourt does a standup routine, and people get to see a show and hear about politics when they might not otherwise be motivated to seek out third-party candidates talking about the issues.

"It’s been a good vehicle for bringing crowds to us by slightly less traditional means," Duncan said.

Despite some successes, Green Party candidates have not been allowed to participate in any of the major debates or televised debates.

Duncan said that given their huge volunteer effort to collect enough signatures to get on the ballot and the media attention they have received, they should be allowed to participate in the debates, most of which are sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

"It does no service to our democracy to freeze out legitimate voices," she said. "Given our poll numbers, we are a very legitimate voice and we will be representing over 200,000 New Yorkers who should get the opportunity to see their candidate in a debate."

Though Duncan and her Green Party colleagues would rather have been included in the debates, she said traveling the state, attending candidate forums, handing out literature and speaking to reporters has still given them a chance to change the discourse.

"For me, a lot of this campaign has been about trying to illustrate what is possible and what New Yorkers should expect from anyone who’s governor," she said. "Every voter that I talk to is an opportunity to frame the debate."

October 30 Coast Guard Target Practice on Lake Ontario Hearing

Dear Partners in Peace,

I'm writing to you both as a member of the Illinois Coalition for Peace and Justice and as a member of Citizens for Lake Safety. We have found here in Illinois that many of the same values which bring us to the peace and justice movement also resonate within the environmental movement.

The Coast Guard is planning to use the Great Lakes for life-fire target practice using lead ammunition. This plan is shortsighted and unwise in many ways - just to name a few: it breaks a treaty with Canada dating back to 1817 which bans militarizing the Great Lakes, it puts known toxins into the Lakes which are the water source for over 41 million people, and it puts boaters at potential risk from stray bullets.

Please pass this information along to any and all in the region who may want to appear to testify at the public meeting in the Rochester Area. I realize that this hearing is very close to the elections, but we have to stop them from polluting the lakes and militarizing our homeland. The cynic in me thinks that is probably not an accident. We have heard that large turnouts of bodies is very important to the success of putting a stop to this plan.

There is more background information available at our website. www.citizensforlakesafety.org. Thank you in advance for any help you can give us in getting the word out.

peace,
marcia

Citizens for Lake Safety

Coast Guard to Use Great Lakes for
Target Practice Using Lead Ammunition No Environmental Study
of long term effects!

The United States Coast Guard has announced plans to turn the Great Lakes, the world’s largest body of fresh water, into the world’s largest freshwater shooting range. Since 1817, a treaty between the U.S. and Canada has prohibited this kind of activity on the Great Lakes.

The Coast Guard has installed machine guns, capable of firing 600 rounds per minute, on its Great Lakes vessels and has begun target practice on the lakes. Now the Coast Guard wants to designate 34 areas in the lakes as permanent target ranges for practice with live ammunition in form of lead ordnance.

The “safety zones” they have mapped out come within five miles of the shore and can be seen with the naked eye from the water’s edge. They are strung around the perimeter of all five Great Lakes (Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and Lake Huron).

Yet Another Reason to Vote Green

Hillary Hits Bottom
Clinton Ought to Know the Serious Legal Ramifications of Allowing Torture in 'Ticking Bomb' Scenarios
by Rosa Brooks

Has Hillary Clinton been watching too many episodes of "24," or is she just determined to prove that she really is entirely without principles?

Whichever it is, Clinton hit a new low last week, telling the New York Daily News that the president should have "some lawful authority" to use torture or other "severe" interrogation methods in a so-called ticking-bomb scenario.

These comments appear to directly contradict her previous statements on the Military Commissions Act, which President Bush signed into law Tuesday. In late September, Clinton objected that the bill "undermines the Geneva Conventions by allowing the president to issue executive orders to redefine what are permissible interrogation techniques. Have we fallen so low as to debate how much torture we are willing to stomach?"

It sure looks that way.

Cliff Thornton "Eliminate Tuition"

Eliminate Tuition, Thornton says in new TV Commercial

Campaign continues to promote free college funding in video ads

Cliff with two of his five daughters, Jessica and Meredith.

Hartford - In his second television commercial, Green Party
gubernatorial candidate Cliff Thornton issues a renewed call for the
elimination of tuition and fees at Connecticut's public colleges and
universities.

The new 60-second spot, filmed at Eastern Connecticut State University
and the University of Connecticut Law School, is posted online at
.

"Connecticut must invest in its young people now," Thornton says. "We
must make state universities and colleges tuition and fee free.
Education is the most powerful weapon against ignorance and poverty. To
democratize our educational institution is to create long term
prosperity and security."

Thornton's new commercial explores how Governor M. Jodi Rell and the
Democrats in the state legislature have failed to create affordable
educational opportunities for students.

"We have to keep bringing this up, because the two parties ignore it,"
Thornton says. "The state has spent hundreds of millions making the
campuses look good, but why have new structures if students can't afford
to enter them? What's worse is that these young people borrow thousands
to gain access to those buildings, and then that debt forces them to
leave Connecticut after graduation because we rank almost dead last in
job growth nationally."

Investing heavily in education costs spurs economic growth, and will
create jobs, as any number of studies equate educational funding and
economic growth. The National Education Association in 2004 correlated
economic growth and educational investment.

"We can grow jobs by redirecting tax dollars to build our collective
intellectual capacity," Thornton says.

Thornton himself went to college to better his employment prospects.

"I wanted to advance my career, and the only way I could do that was
with a college education," Thornton says.

He graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1964, and had he gone
to UConn then, it would have been free. But after his mother died of a
heroin overdose, Thornton enrolled in the Army, and served in Germany.
He finally earned his bachelors' degree in marketing until 1986 at Post
University in Waterbury. He financed his tuition payments at the private
university with help from his employer, SNET, and the Veterans
Administration.

"I understand everyone is not so lucky to have that kind of help, which
is why we need to eliminate tuition as a hurdle for students to earn
their education," Thornton says. "The retention rates at Connecticut's
public colleges are poor."

Pointing to Eastern Connecticut State University, like he does in the
commercial, Thornton notes that its two year retention rate is 59
percent, .

"A large percentage of students who drop out do so because they cannot
afford school," Thornton says. "This is not right."

Thornton is advocating that people who leave college - for whatever
reason - should have the benefit of free tuition as well.

"If Governor Rell is ever interested in completing her degree, I don't
think, despite her years on the public payroll, that she should have to
pay, either," Thornton says. "Making education accessible to all should
be one of our top priorities. We need a GI Bill for all citizens. Until
everyone who wants to go can attend college, we are failing on
delivering the promise of the American dream."

The text of the ad is as follows:
"The two major parties consistently underfund education. Young people
suffer and our economy shows the effects when government slashes grants
to public universities. Consider Eastern Connecticut State University,
where tuition has outpaced inflation, putting school out of reach for
many worthy students. So how have the Republican governor and the
Democratic state legislature responded? They cut funding! The gap
between state funding and cost per student is almost $3,000. The problem
is not unique to Eastern. Isn't it time to start investing in our young
people. Let's eliminate tuition and fees at Connecticut's public
colleges and universities. Vote free college. Vote Green."

McCourt Stumps for GPUS

Green Party of the United States

Green Governor Candidate Malachy McCourt on the campaign trail in NY. Photo by Deyva Arthur, GPNY
“Malachy is a man of courage and integrity. The people of NY want peace. They are tired of politics as usual.”
–Cindy Sheehan, Peace Activist
October, 2006

Dear Activist:

Our party needs money. Just enough to get the truth out.

It is often said that money is the root of all evil. Wrong! The correct quote is "Love of money is the root of all evil". So, share your love and your money with the Green Party and you won’t be sorry. Is there a need to tell you why we need the funds?

Every government program intended for the betterment of our citizens -the children, the older folk, the vulnerable, and the disabled has been cut. Funds that were used to build a stable and secure future are being used to kill and maim people far away. People who have done us no harm are now provoked into hatred of us and all that we are. Our government of hate and destruction has put us and our families in great danger. After hijacking the presidency and other offices in the land; concealment of truth is the major objective of our government.

Our founders declared "All men are created equal", "People are innocent until proven guilty", "Accused have the right to a fair and speedy trial and not be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment". An astounding series of bills passed by our hijacking government-gang have all but rendered the basic principles of the US Constitution moot.

Let us then, as true patriots, as human beings, hang together (or as Franklin said we shall hang separately); and let the warmongers, the torturers, the thugs, the evangelistic evildoers, and the pious murderers know that their reign of terror is done finished and we shall accord them a right denied other folk, a fair trial and justice.

Free speech is expensive and liberty is not free. Therefore, it is necessary for all thinking fair minded people to send money for our mission. What can I afford, you ask? Let’s say you are arrested. What could you afford to regain your freedom? Thousands I’d say, even when innocent. The Green Party needs your help to help candidates like me Defend Democracy. If every Green in the country digs in for $100; or, if you can give $100 for yourself and $100 for the Green who is tapped out at the moment, we together we can build a powerful, progressive Green Party that can take on the lying, greedy cowards currently in office.

It’s only a matter of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. The founders of our country imperfect and fallible as they were all pledged their lives, their honor, and their fortunes; and we merely ask for one out of three -and not all, just a small portion.

Go Green! Help us grow!

Gratefully yours,

Malachy McCourt
Green Party Candidate for Governor of New York

Greens Successfully Defend Ballot Line from Fraudulent Candidate

Greens Successfully Defend Ballot Line from Fraudulent Candidate

Green Party of New York State
October 8, 2006
Contact: Gloria Mattera, Co-chair
Craig Taylor, Secretary, Green Party of Genesee County
Jason Nabewaniec, Co-chair, GPNYS Campaign Committee

Craig Taylor, secretary of the Green Party of Genesee County, spoke at his home in Darien Center to announce that Christine Murphy's name will not be on the ballot as a result of his successful challenge to her petition to run for United States Congress in New York's 26th Congressional District on the Green Party line. The other candidates for this seat are the incumbent Republican, Tom Reynolds, and his
Democratic Party challenger, Jack Davis.

Taylor spoke out because recent media reports have labeled Murphy as a Green Party candidate. "I wish to make it clear that Christine Murphy is not and never has been the Green Party's candidate for Congress," Taylor stated. "According to the Monroe County Board of Elections, Christine Murphy is a registered Democratic who resides outside the 26th congressional district in Penfield, NY. Our research shows that her petitions were carried by members of the Republican Party," Taylor said.

"Ms Murphy never approached the Green Party about her campaign and was never given permission to use the Green Party name or our logo," said Jason Nabewaniec, Co-Chair of the Green Party of New York State's Campaign Committee. "We do not condone this attempt to hijack our party line," Nabewaniec said.

"If we are at war with another country and attempting to instill democratic values upon another nation, it is critical that our elections be honest and ethical," Donna Rae Sutherland current chairman of Genesee Green Party said. "Any person who attempts to corrupt our nation's election process, especially today when our soldiers are fighting for the 'freedom' of democracy--is the lowest of the low. They are, in fact, tyrants disguised as public servants."

Taylor said that he was pleased to see that 8% of respondents in a September, 28th poll conducted by SurveyUSA poll (http://www.wgrz.com/news/downloads/092806-ReynoldsDavisPoll.pdf) chose a candidate they thought represented the Green Party. "There is obviously strong support for the Green Party in this district, and we look forward to running a real Green Party candidate for this seat in the next election."
