Adam Durand Fundraiser a Success!

The fundraiser for Adam Durand was held yesterday at Genesee Valley Park and it was quite a success. There were at least 70 people there, each helping Adam with his legal bills for being charged with burglary (not guilty) and tresspassing (found guilty) in his part in making the video Wegmans Cruelty.

Prominent local Green, Deborah Magone-Fragale performed at the beginning, then hung around to jam with a bunch of local musicians who just happened to be in the park and asked if they could get their gear and play for the group. They weren't even a real band, but they stayed & played (well) for two hours!

The Greens got about 50 petition signatures and a number of people left with copies of the Greens' Platform. Green candidate for Attorney General, Rachel Triechler was also there and she was great in talking to folks through out the event.

Fellow prominent Greens, Melissa Nicholson & Jack Spula were also present!

A pretty good turnout considering neither our weekly "alternative" nor corporate newspapers decided to mention the event.

Thanks going to Deb Magone-Fragale, whoever those dudes were in the band, Compassionate Consumers, Soy Boy for providing the food, the chefs - Nicole & John from Compassionate Consumers and of course all of you who came!

Going Long on Eliot Spitzer

Jul. 21, 2006

Going Long on Eliot Spitzer

INDUSTRIESFinancial Services

For a man who has made a career out of policing the financial
sector, and more than a few enemies in the process, Eliot Spitzer
has attracted a substantial amount of Wall Street money on his quest
to become New York's next governor. But the latest elections data
suggest that his strongest support within the financial sector
continues to come from executives at hedge funds rather than
investment banks or old-line securities firms.

Records released earlier this week show that Mr. Spitzer, New York's
attorney general and a Democrat, continued to add to his already
substantial campaign war chest in the first six months of 2006. He
raised $11 million in the first half of the year, while Democratic
rival Thomas R. Suozzi (who has the backing of one of Mr. Spitzer's
fiercest critics, Home Depot co-founder and former New York Stock
Exchange director Kenneth G. Langone) collected $4 million, and
Republican opponent John Faso raised $1.5 million.

To be sure, donations to Mr. Spitzer's closely watched campaign have
come from many industries and parts of the country. His latest donor
list includes Steven Spielberg (who gave $5,000) , Kentucky horse
breeder Tracy Farmer ($50,000) and Hollywood agent Ariel Emanuel,
known as the basis for "Entourage's" Ari Gold. (He has also
collected $15,000 from actor Edward Norton and $1,000 from heiress
Ivanka Trump.)

But financiers and corporate deal-makers are also represented, with
real estate developers, hedge fund mangers and fellow lawyers all
ranking among his top donors for the first half of the year.

Though, as The New York Times has pointed out, few Wall Street
financial firms have donated directly to Mr. Spitzer, Byron Trott,
the co-head of Goldman Sachs's Chicago office, and Laurence
Grafstein, a managing director at Lazard, both gave as individuals
to his campaign. More plentiful among his donor list are hedge fund
figures like George Soros's son, Robert; David Ganek of Level Global
Investors, and Henry Laufer of Renaissance Partners. Steven Rattner
of investment firm Quadrangle Group is also listed among Mr.
Spitzer's supporters.

Other high-profile entrepreneurs and executives who gave to the
campaign this year include Netscape founder Jim Clark and Henry
Silverman, the chairman of Cendant.

Also notable are the corporations that have given to Mr. Spitzer's
campaign. Both KPMG and PriceWaterhouseCooper, accounting firms that
Mr. Spitzer has scrutinized in the past, donated $12,500 each to his
campaign. And the law firm Nixon Peabody, which in the past has
donated heavily to Republican candidates in the state, gave $40,660
to the attorney general.

Below, a sampling of some of the Spitzer campaign's biggest donors
from the financial sector:

Donor Name Firm Amount
Steve Rattner Quadrangle Group $50,100
Ira Riklis Sutherland Capital Management $50,000
Robert Soros Soros Capital Management $25,000
Daniel Benton Andor Capital Management $25,000
Henry Laufer Renaissance Partners $25,000
David Kowitz Industrial Capital Partners $25,000
Laurance Grafstein Lazard $20,000
Edgar Wachenheim III Greenhaven Associates $15,000
John Kunas North Fork Bank $10,000
S.P. Wijegoonaratna Fortress Investment $10,000
David Ganek Level Global Investors $10,000

Spitzer's Donors Include an Array of Power Brokers

July 19, 2006

Spitzer's Donors Include an Array of Power Brokers

By DANNY HAKIM and MICHAEL COOPER

ALBANY, July 18 — With more than three months left before New
Yorkers elect a new governor, Eliot Spitzer is already raising money
like an incumbent.

And while Mr. Spitzer, the state attorney general, sweeps in
contributions from a who's who of lobbyists, special-interest
groups, hedge-fund managers and horse breeders, a cursory look at
some of the names in his campaign filings for the first half of the
year, which were released on Monday night, could also lead one to
think he was running for governor of California instead of New York.

In a sign of his broader appeal among Democrats, Mr. Spitzer's West
Coast celebrity donors include two-thirds of the trio who founded
the DreamWorks studio, Steven Spielberg ($5,000) and Jeffrey
Katzenberg ($25,000), as well as the Eagles drummer Don Henley and
the group's manager, Irving Azoff, each of whom gave $10,000 in the
latest filing period. Barbra Streisand and Ben Affleck each gave
$1,000, as did the celebrity hairstylist Vidal Sassoon.

Boldface names also pitched in closer to home, with Mr. Spitzer
receiving $15,000 from George Steinbrenner; $5,000 from the N.B.A.
commissioner, David Stern; $11,000 from Bo Dietl, the former New
York City police officer who is now a celebrity security consultant;
and $15,000 from the actor Edward Norton.

More notable is the amount of money that Mr. Spitzer, who has a
formidable lead in the polls, raised from interest groups that prowl
the corridors of the Capitol. His pitch to voters is that he will
bring to Albany the same combative style that he used in taking on
dubious industry practices at investment banks, mutual fund
companies and insurers — "on Day 1 of a Spitzer administration,
everything changes," he said in his acceptance speech at the
Democratic convention in May.

But many of his largest donors are associated with special interests
that do business with the state. Take horse breeders, who have no
shortage of interest, in part because New York has prominent tracks —
Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga — and because the New York Racing
Association's franchise to run those tracks is up for renewal next
year.

Among Mr. Spitzer's largest donors are Bill Casner, who heads the
Thoroughbred Owner and Breeders Association, Tracy Farmer, a
Kentucky breeder, and Angela Beck, the wife of a prominent Kentucky
breeder. Each donated $50,000, $100 short of the maximum allowable.

Mr. Spitzer also continues to get contributions from lobbyists and
special interests associated with both Democrats and Republicans. In
Albany, power has long trumped ideology when it comes to
contributions.

Rappleyea Public Affairs, a lobbying firm led by Clarence D.
Rappleyea, a former Republican Assembly minority leader, gave Mr.
Spitzer's campaign $4,000 this month. And Mel Miller Government
Affairs, a lobbying group led by Mr. Miller, a former Democratic
assembly speaker who was in power when Mr. Rappleyea led the
opposition, gave Mr. Spitzer's campaign $4,000 between February and
June.

Mr. Spitzer also received a $1,000 check in June from Armand P.
D'Amato, a lobbyist whose brother, former Senator Alfonse M.
D'Amato, a Republican who is now also a lobbyist, recently told a
private gathering that Mr. Spitzer would make a "great governor."

Robert Congel, a Syracuse developer who has long had grandiose plans
to build an upstate megamall, contributed $13,500 during the most
recent filing period.

Mr. Spitzer — whose efforts as attorney general to police Medicaid
fraud have come under fire from both Republicans and his Democratic
opponent, the Nassau County executive, Thomas R. Suozzi — accepted
contributions from several medical trade organizations that
represent clients in areas his office has investigated. In recent
years, Mr. Spitzer's office has fined several companies that provide
medical equipment to Medicaid recipients, including a company that
sold used equipment as new and a provider who billed Medicaid for
equipment he never supplied. In April Mr. Spitzer's campaign
accepted a $23,000 contribution from the New York Medical Equipment
Providers political action committee.

Mr. Spitzer accepted a $2,500 contribution from Wal-Mart in March.
In June, he came out against legislation that would have required
more businesses to pay health care costs, widely known in Albany as
the "Wal-Mart bill.'' It was not enacted. In 2003, Mr. Spitzer's
office negotiated two settlements with Wal-Mart, including one
following investigations that showed that minors had been able to
buy cigarettes at Wal-Mart. The company agreed to take steps to
prevent tobacco sales to minors and to pay $437,500 to cover the
cost of the investigation.

Mr. Spitzer did return more than $250,000 in contributions, however,
about half of which went back to donors connected to Milberg Weiss
Bershad & Schulman, the giant law firm indicted in May on charges of
making secret payments to plaintiffs. The campaign also returned
$2,500 to the CBS Corporation, which is believed to be a focus of a
continuing inquiry by Mr. Spitzer's office of payola — the practice
of music companies paying radio programmers to play their artists'
music.

"Eliot has built a strong reputation as an independent leader who
has been tough enough to stand up to entrenched special interests on
behalf of the people of the state and will continue to do so," said
Christine Anderson, a spokeswoman for Mr. Spitzer. "Who he raises
money from is not an indicator," she said. "Eliot has always been
independent and will continue to be. He spent seven years fighting
for the people."

Many Wall Street executives would no doubt agree that Mr. Spitzer
has not been as accommodating as most other politicians. But despite
his assaults on Wall Street, he is still drawing money from a wide
range of powerful financiers: Henry Silverman, the chairman of the
Cendant Corporation, gave $50,000; the Silicon Valley venture
capitalist James Clark gave $50,100; and a Miami real estate
developer, Jorge Perez, gave $50,000.

All told, Mr. Spitzer raised $11 million in the first half of the
year, compared with $1.5 million for his Republican opponent, John
Faso, and $4 million for his Democratic opponent, Mr. Suozzi, who
showed fund-raising resilience despite trailing far behind in the
polls.

But Mr. Spitzer's rivals clearly have some catching up to do. Even
Mr. Faso's former boss, the lobbyist Charles Manatt, gave to Mr.
Spitzer — though to be fair, Mr. Manatt typically gives to
Democrats. As for Mr. Suozzi, the best Hollywood name he mustered
was Peter Farrelly, director of gross-out fare like "Dumb and
Dumber."

Your Representative Sponsors Terrorism

On July 20th, there was a bill brought forth in the US Congress, condemming Lebanon and Supporting Israel, even though Israel has been also bombing civilians, non-military infrastructure and committing war crimes. How did your representatives vote? Every congress person who represents parts of Monroe County (yes, including Louise) voted for this.

Check out the vote here.

Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin. When you continue to help them you continue to prop up this corporate war agenda. "Not my congressperson, senator, county legislator, city councilperson." Yes, yours as well.

Flower Power in the Flower City

Alison Duncan and Eric Jones before the Rochester Pride Parade

Last weekend I made a campaign trip to Rochester. I arrived late Friday night and got a crash course in local Rochester politics—the schools, the ferry, pollution and housing among other topics—along with a short tour of the city from Jason Nabewaniec. He and his wife, Misty, were my terrific hosts for the duration. Early Saturday morning we met voters and passed out literature at the farmer’s market. I live just down the street from the Union Square Greenmarket and when I’m in Keene Valley I enjoy the farmer’s market there. Visiting the Rochester farmer’s market was like stepping into a Technicolor dream of fruits and vegetables. Sadly, no matter how I calculate it, it’s just not cost effective to travel out to Rochester to do my weekly shopping. Folks at the farmer’s market were a fairly laid-back, diverse group of people who, by and large, were very interested in hearing about a Green ballot option.

Jason and I were joined by Timothy, a local Green, at the market. Timothy and I talked about a lot about petitioning and he pledged at least a thousand signatures. The Green Party does not have ballot status so we face a significant challenge in collecting 15,000 valid signatures to get on the ballot. Petitioning started on July 11 and will end August 22. Any registered voter or any notary registered in New York State can carry a petition. Watch a movie about how to petition, read the letter Malachy and I wrote about the importance of petitioning and email duncanforltgovernor@gmail.com to connect with other petitioners or petition coordinators.

After lunch we had a fundraiser, than it was on to the Rochester Pride Parade. The theme of the parade was “Flower Power in the Flower City.” I was struck by how many creative and funny some of the groups presentations were. I was also struck by the strong presence of religious organizations that were marching in support of LGBT folk. Their presence became especially significant as we marched past a number of religious protesters towards the end of the march. Eric Jones came from Buffalo for the event and he and I worked the crowds along the parade, handing out about 1000 postcards for my campaign. Jason, Misty and local Green organizers David and Zuza marched with the Monroe County Green party banner, two dogs, and sunflowers that I bought at the farmer’s market. Misty is an American Sign Language interpreter and at the end of the parade I had an opportunity to campaign to a deaf couple with Misty translating between us.

After the parade, Jason, Misty and I walked back through an especially beautiful part of Rochester—the art district and the George Eastman House. True to the nickname there were flowers everywhere, and, despite our sore feet, it was very relaxing after the excitement of the parade.

Thank you to Eric, Zuza, David, Timothy and especially Jason and Misty for welcoming me to Rochester. It was a very fun and informative trip and a great opportunity to meet a lot of Western New York voters.

Thank you for volunteering to petition!

Dear Greens and Friends,

Thank you for volunteering to petition!

Thank you for clearing some
time in your calendars, attending a petition training, testing your
collection of ballpoint pens....After four long years of petitioning
for City Council, petitioning for U.S. Senate, petitioning for School
Board, petitioning for State Assembly...we embark on an entirely
unique petitioning effort. This independent petitioning period could
be the last independent petitioning period for the Green Party of New
York State. If we get at least 50,000 votes for the McCourt/Duncan
ticket on November 7, for the next four years we will enjoy the same
legal privileges as the major parties. New York State will reprint
the voter registration forms to include "Green" as an option for party
enrollment. Candidates will only need to gather a small number of
Green signatures to get on the ballot. Greens won't be staying home
on primary day because, if two or more candidates are competing for
the Green Party line, New York State will organize and pay for a
primary. Voters will stop hunting for our candidates names in odd
places on the ballot because we'll have our very own ballot line. If,
every four years, our gubernatorial candidates get 50,000 votes, we
never have to give those privileges back. It all starts with getting
15,000 valid signatures over the next six weeks.

The petition can be downloaded and printed out here
http://gpnys.dreamhosters.com/wp-content/GreenPetition.pdf

We are very proud to be running for the Green Party this year. All of
the candidates received strong support from the State Committee during
the convention. (The support for Malachy was unanimous!) All of the
candidates immediately hit the ground running---fundraising,
organizing events, traveling the state, getting press coverage and
printing literature. Over ten thousand New Yorkers have already taken
a piece of campaign literature and thousands have already met a
candidate face to face. Craig Seeman has been organizing videographers
to follow the candidates and post videos online---there have been over
1500 viewings of candidate videos already. Our campaign teams and our
volunteers across the state are working hard and working together to
get our names, our faces and our message out there. We are confident
that, if we can get on the ballot, the McCourt/Duncan ticket will get
more than 50,000 votes and next year's local candidates---with their
resources spent on campaigning rather than petitioning---will have a
real chance to win elected office.

We need at least 15,000 valid signatures to get our names on the
ballot. Petitioners are essential to the success of our campaigns
this year. We know that the next six weeks will bring exhausting,
exhilarating, difficult and fun hard work. If folks say: "Why should I
sign for you? You don't have a chance"...you should answer, "You have
less of a chance with the other parties. With us the Green Party you
have more than a chance of decent caring government representing your
interests. So don't waste your vote---give it to us!"

Thank you for your efforts this year. We will both be out there
petitioning and campaigning next to you, but we know that the majority
of signatures will be gathered by dedicated, individual Greens. Your
petitioning work is invaluable to this campaign and to the future of
Green campaigning in New York. With your help, we are confident that
we can get on the ballot and restore ballot access to the New York
State Green Party.

Sincerely,

Malachy McCourt and Alison Duncan

petitioning and campaigning next to you, but we know that the majority
of signatures will be gathered by dedicated, individual Greens. Your
petitioning work is invaluable to this campaign and to the future of
Green campaigning in New York. With your help, we are confident that
we can get on the ballot and restore ballot access to the New York
State Green Party.

Sincerely,

Malachy McCourt and Alison Duncan

Happy Fourth of July 2006

Green Party of Monroe County: January 2006
The first 4th of July in 40 years without a Voting Rights Act !!?
Forty years later, reauthorization of that hard-fought right is being blocked by a few House Republicans from southern states. Most of these obstructionists want to lift a provision that requires close federal oversight of nine states with histories of discrimination.
